Save money

I drive a 2001 Ford Taurus. For the first couple of years I got about 18 to 22mpg. Since I did not drive much I did not give it too much thought. I asked a mechanic I knew and he gave me a couple of pointers that he figured would be helpful. First he said to check the air filter and the tire pressure. I keep the maintenance up so the air filter was clean. But a couple of tires were down a little. He then asked how I accelerate and about my driving habits. I told him I had something of a lead foot. He advised to keep my RPM below 2000 for a week and see what kind of a difference that would make. To my surprise, my mileage jumped up to 30mpg in the city and 33 on the highway! I wonder how many people do not realize they could be increasing their mileage so easily. Most American drivers seem to be pretty lazy and selfish, much like myself. We like to leave at the last minute and then justify driving faster, because we hate to be late. I can recall racing from light to light, jockeying for position. Everyday I see so many others doing the same thing. I was so selfish and self centered. I was making myself out to be more important or better than the slower drivers. I cut them off; I ran through “pink lights”, I would weave in and out to get to the front. I cannot count how many times I nearly had an accident. I rarely would come to a complete stop for a stop sign, especially when traffic would be approaching. Why should I be forced to wait for them? Now I enjoy driving and saving money. I smile when I fill up after driving 400 miles on thirteen gallons of gas. But not everyone is happy. The guy behind me gets frustrated with my slow driving. However, he is so proud he can accelerate at 5000 to 6000 rpm and quickly get past me just in time to make his right hand turn, or make it through that “pink light”. I get embarrassed because it reminds me that used to be me. I wish I could convince others so they could save $100 a month on gas. Maybe someone will read this and maybe they might even want to try to do the same. If anyone does, I would like to hear what happens.
